Linett Kamala

Cultural producer and event organiser

About

Linett Kamala, widely known as the “Sound System Queen,” is a pioneering DJ, artist, academic, creative producer and community organiser whose work sits at the intersection of sound system culture, female empowerment and community healing. One of the first female DJs to perform on a sound system at Notting Hill Carnival in the early 1980s, she began aged just 15 and now serves as a Board Director, one of the overall organisers of the event and also hosts a dedicated learning space at the festival.

Founder and Director of LIN KAM ART, Linett works with her own custom hand-built sound systems, blending art, natural materials and powerful sonic technology. Her installations and performances have been presented at institutions including the Royal Albert Hall, the British Museum and the British Library.

Renowned for her curation, talent spotting and mentorship, she champions women, LGBTQ and other underrepresented individuals in sound system culture and was nominated for DJ Mag’s Best of British Underground Hero Award in 2023. Sponsored by global brands including Google Arts & Culture, Linett is a regular speaker at international platforms such as TEDx and Amsterdam Dance Event.

More recent updates on her practice can be found via the social media handles @linett_kamala and @lin_kam_art
