About

Have you ever wanted to find your unique vocal identity?

Guided by professional vocal coach Ajay Henry, this is an unmissable opportunity to connect with your authentic voice in a way that’s inclusive, fun and safe.

This workshop helps you get to know your voice beyond the gendered labels, allowing for discussion about gender perception and our understanding of a healthy voice. Together, we’ll delve into a short introduction to vocal anatomy and breathing, and explore exercises around pitch, inflection, resonance and articulation. You’ll learn techniques to support a healthy voice, working with your unique instrument.

You will also be supported to reflect on societal perceptions around voice and gender, and how we can challenge these with self-kindness and awareness.

This is an explorative safe space. Mistakes are welcomed and can be discussed non-judgementally within the session. Exercises can be done individually or in groups. Individual singing is welcomed but not essential, and we want you to feel empowered to decide what’s best for you.

This is an inclusive workshop for HE students only. We encourage students of all singing abilities and genders to join us to explore and enjoy your authentic voice.  Spaces are limited though, so please pre-register.

This workshop is led and based on research by Ajay Henry (he/him), NTU Music Performance lecturer and vocal coach. A self-confessed “voice geek”, Ajay is passionate about helping students explore their voice in a way that aligns with their identity.

Ajay recently completed his masters in Vocal Pedagogy, including the dissertation: “Can an understanding of vocal health, combined with the use of an anatomy-based teaching tool, enable transgender and non-binary students to experience their voice in a positive way?”

Supporting the workshop will be NTSU Coordinator Jo Lewis (she/her). Jo is also a musician, songwriter, poet and workshop facilitator, and is trying not to get overexcited about this workshop.

Care Note:   We will be talking in the session about topics relating to gender, dysphoria and societal issues. We realise these can be difficult to discuss and we want all participants to feel safe and comfortable. We are supportive and non-judgemental, but we don’t have therapeutic training. We will be signposting to appropriate support services, should you need these after the workshop.

Important: Sign-ups are only valid with your NTU student email address.

The organisers will contact you with more information about this event after registration.
